1. How does it all work? 

UBC - Sauder School of Business offers the Real Estate Trading Services Course through correspondence. As well as the Mortgage Brokers Course.

Meaning you register online (www.sauder.ubc.ca/realestate) pay $875.00 for the Real Estate Trading Services Course or $945.00 for the Sub-Mortgages Course with your credit card and UBC will send all the books to your home in approx 1 weeks time.

Each student is given up to 1 year to complete the required assignments (not that you need one year) and then is eligible to apply to write the final examination. Each assignment is approx. 20 multiple choice questions after each chapter or two.  You must pass each assignment by 60% or try again. (for a fee each time).  

The Exam is 100 multiple choice questions and is 3 hours long at UBC.  You must pass it by 65%.  Sounds low, but be careful.  This exam is trickier than harder.

English Requirement:  Note:  You do not have to fulfill the English requirement to start the course, you must have it fulfilled it, in order to apply to write the exam.  Check the UBC website or call them (604-822-8444 -0)  for specific requirements about the English requirement.  UBC requires a Canadian Grade 12  or GED or you can take the LPI (language proficiency index test). This is UBC's requirements, so please check with them.   

2.  So ....Why Real Smart?

We are pro's at teaching you this in baby steps and without any intimidation!  We start you turning your calculator on together the first class.

Oh, by the way.  Real Smart Instructors are trained (extensively the Real Smart system) to teach you the entire course...including the math.  So what?  So, ask around.  Most times you find a Mortgage Brokers is hired to come in and teach you a couple of sessions and then leave.  Leaving you frustrated and furious because you have no one to answer any questions.  Believe me, you will have questions.

Plus.. in many Real Smart class we have 2 Instructors in class when it comes to the math portion. There to look after your needs!

Are you a visual learner? 

Do you like to see it, hear it, and then do it? 

That's why Real Smart designed the entire course, even the math on a Big Screen using PowerPoint.  Listen to your instructor tell you what you just read in the UBC manual in simple terminology you can now understand as you watch the screen and see first hand great examples.  No more watching messy instructor handwriting.  Watch your instructor "click" in the formulas.  Watch as your instructor builds the formulas as she/he describes what to do.  Follow along in your Real Smart Workbook. 

Do we pay Real Smart and UBC?

Yes & No.   UBC charges their fee for the course material and the exam.  It is strictly correspondence.  There are no classes to attend.  All your work must be self taught, including the Math!  So you can take their course on your own, teach yourself, submit your assignments and hope you don't have too many questions or problems.  This may be a great way for some.  But for most students, we know they like to be in a classroom environment.   Plus there is an incredible failure rate with people doing this course on their own, we know, because we get the phone calls to come into class.  What we hear over and over again is,  Why didn't I just call you and go into your class instead of doing this on my own, it's too tricky!"

We have found people like it if they are put on a schedule to ensure the work is complete. They are looking for and can now have a sounding board, instructors and classmates to help them with their questions in our classes.  Someone to email or call and instantly get your questions answered.  Instead of being frustrated and spending way too much time on one thing. 

Real Smart charges their fee as well to teach you the entire course using their own workbook written in simple English so everyone can understand it.  I simply haven't found a way to not pay my instructors...hmmm.   Just kidding.  Our Instructors are hand picked and personally trained through the entire course; start to finish, back to front.  They all have Personality Plus or they are not part of the Real Smart Team….period.

Not everyone needs to come to tutorial.  But most people want the direction, focus & Instructors to explain what you don't understand. Instructors to clarify things.  Classmates to form study groups with.  Someone to keep you going, encourage you when you need support. Real Smart is FAMOUS for the Easy Calculator Formulas they have designed and provide each student with all the formulas in a simple way.  (We start the calculator the first day of class.  You literally learn how to turn the calculator on!)

Real Smart walks you through all 26 chapters in “Simple English” so you can now make sense of each chapter.  (this allows you to understand it better, then at home work on your assignments and bring any questions you may have back to class for help!)

Real Smart classes all start together and end together as a group.  No new students jumping in and out of classes as we go along. (Creates a more cohesive learning environment. Everyone is on the same page, literally.  One student is not just learning the math, while ½ the class is just about finished and the other part of the class is in the middle)

Mock Exam   

We provide you with a 100 multiple choice exam, just like the Real one to get you prepared for the real exam.

Once you have completed and passed all 20 assignments and have given UBC proof of the English requirement, then you can apply for the exam.  Students usually take this time (usually 4 – 6 weeks ) after each class to study and practice the calculator, until they feel confident to go write the UBC exam.

The UBC exam is 100 multiple choice questions in a 3-hour period.  This exam is offered 4 times per year and is included in your $875.00 UBC fee.  As well, UBC offers students (for an additional fee of $125.00 and once you have met the English requirements and have successfully passed all 20 assignments), the option of writing the exam at UBC on their computer, at UBC.  The advantage to you is, there are only a few students writing at one time and you receive your results very quickly.  Often that day or the next, as compared to the written exam, which could take up to 4 weeks.
